Shawn and Earl Scruggs

This is a shot of me pickin' a little bit with one of my idols, Earl Scruggs... We were sitting on the back porch of the late great Dave 'STRINGBEAN' Akeman's house.  A nice lady bought the house and remodeled it. To my knowledge this night was the first time anyone had a pickin' party at the old house place since the murder of Stringbean and his wife Estelle in 1973. There were people playing music all around the house. While we were pickin' on the back porch there was another big jam session going on. Banjo notes were flying through the air and fiddles were crying in a swarm. The owner of the house had taken what appeared to be old tounge and grooved lumber from the inside of the cabin and piled it up in the fire pit. The moon was shinning and the crickets were singing. All of a sudden the fire was started, and the old lumber crackled and jumped to life. The flames jumped to what seemed to me to be twenty foot in the air. It felt like a fitting send off for String and Estelle, and a salute from the pickers of my generation who never had the chance to meet them... And a celebration they would have enjoyed. My buddy Verlon Thompson was there and sang a song he wrote about the tragedy.

LONG LIVE EARL SCRUGGS!!!!!
